A rather nice example of a classic! This ELO Ware cigarette box was made in the 1930's by the Birkby Company in Liversedge, West Yorkshire. It features an Assyrian knight with lance fighting a Lion. This particular box is rare as it is both fully hinged and comes with the original tray (these are usually missing). It is in good condition throughout with age related wear but no damage.
Size: 17 (wide) x 8.5 (deep) x 5.5cm (tall)
ELO ware
In the early 20th century, the Birkby brothers were much interested in the newly invented Bakelite - and they were inspired by the new material and set about developing their own processes for moulding under the trade name ELO, (dev ELO ped).
The lid of this box is made from ELO ware, that is, moulded urea formaldehyde.
