Hat blocks

UK milliners' hat blocks are carved wooden forms used to shape hats and have been essential to British hat making since the 18th century. Traditionally crafted from hardwoods such as lime, beech or alder, each block was designed for a specific hat style and size. Centres of production included Luton, renowned for its straw hat industry. Skilled block makers created thousands of patterns for fashion houses and working milliners. During the 20th century, changing fashions and mass production reduced demand, but vintage hat blocks remain highly collectible, valued for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and enduring connection to Britain's millinery heritage.
