Shelley

The Shelley company began its journey in the 1870's as Wilemans and then later Foleys until a dispute with another company using a Foley brand led to them being unable to continue with that name. By that stage Percy Shelley, who had started working for the company as a travelling salesman was in charge. The company began to brand its pottery as Shelley in around 1910 although the company name did not change to reflect this until 1925.

The inter-war years saw a rise in profile for the company's strong white china products and new coloured ranges such as the much-loved Harmony range. The company's products were seen as good quality and strong.

Percy Shelley's sons and grandsons continued to run the company and expand in the potteries, developing electric kilns to replace the old and familiar bottle kilns. They created a subsidiary to supply these kilns to other pottery companies, changing the landscape of the area.

Percy passed away in 1966 and shortly afterwards the company became part of Allied English Potteries alongside its Royal Doulton brand. After outstanding orders were filled, the production of all Shelley products ceased. This would suggest that AEP were only interested in Shelley for its site and distribution. The site continued to produce Royal Doulton until the 1980's when production was moved abroad. No trace now exists of the former Shelley factory but we still love love love the china.
